CURRENT STATUS

Full Working Group The full Working Group has now completed substantive review of public comments on its Initial Report and supplemental Initial Report . Through this review process, the WG considered the comments received as well as what changes need to be made to the recommendations contained in the Final Report. To support the review, the Working Group used a series of summary documents available on the WG wiki . At ICANN66, the WG held two sessions ( session 1, session 2 ) on Saturday, 2 November and two sessions ( session 3 , session 4 ) on Monday, 4 November. During the first Saturday session, Work Track 5 presented its Final Report to the WG. In the second and fourth sessions, the WG refined a framework it is developing as part of its recommendations for improving predictability in the execution of the New gTLD Program. The third session was devoted to discussing topics that may be the focus of an additional round of Public Comment prior to publication of the Final Report.

Conclusion of Work Track 5

Work Track 5 has delivered its Final Report to the full WG and presented its recommendations to the WG at ICANN66. This concludes the work of Work Track 5. The WG will now consider the recommendations of Work Track 5, which will be subject to a consensus call in the WG, along with all other recommendations.

NEXT STEPS

Full Working Group

The WG’s next phase of work will focus on refining recommendations and other supporting content to include in the draft Final Report. The WG expects to hold an additional Public Comment proceeding in early 2020 prior to publishing the WG’s Final Report. The precise scope of this Public Comment is currently under discussion in the WG.

WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?

In June 2014, the GNSO Council established a Discussion Group that was intended to evaluate the experiences of the 2012 round gTLD Program and to identify possible areas for future GNSO policy development. The Discussion Group’s deliverables served as the basis for the GNSO Council request for a Preliminary Issue Report in June of 2015. Following the publication of the Final Issue Report , the GNSO Council adopted the charter for the PDP Working Group, which began its work in February 2016. The Working Group initially concentrated on a set of overarching issues. It later conducted deliberations on additional topics in its charter using five separate Work Tracks: Work Track 1 - Overall Process/Support/Outreach, Work Track 2 - Legal/Regulatory, Work Track 3: String Contention/Objections & Disputes, Work Track 4: Internationalized Domain Names/Technical & Operations, Work Track 5: Geographic Names at the Top Level.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

The Discussion Group identified a number of subjects that may require further analysis and possible formulation of policy language. There are existing policy recommendations adopted by the GNSO Council and ICANN Board, which will remain in place unless the PDP WG determines that changes are needed.
